UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned the twin bombings of a Shi'a community sports club in Kabul that claimed 20 lives.
"The secretary-general condemns (Wednesday's) twin attack in Kabul City targeting civilians at a sports center in an area populated by Afghanistan's Shi' a community," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres.
"The secretary-general extends his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," Dujarric said. "Every effort should be made to bring to justice those who organized this attack against civilians."
"The secretary-general expresses the solidarity of the United Nations with the government and people of Afghanistan and supports the efforts of the authorities to fight terrorism," the spokesman said.
Published reports said at least 20 people were killed and more than 70 injured in the twin attacks on the sports club Wednesday.
First a suicide bomber detonated his device inside the club, the reports said. Afterward, a car bomb was set off outside the building killing and wounding first responders and journalists arriving at the scene.
