YANGON, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has announced establishing smoke-free zones in Yangon region by 2022, aiming at reducing the consumption of tobacco-related products, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

Managed by People's Health Foundation, smoke-free zones will be set up in 33 townships which include 12 townships in municipal areas.

Smoke-free zones will be designated especially in public areas -- schools, hospitals, parks, shopping centers and others to protect people from being affected by smoking-related health problems.

The project will also be effective for non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke, causing potential diseases including lung cancer, asthma, stroke and coronary heart disease.

In accordance with a 2014 survey, about 41.4 percent of men and 8.4 percent of women are consumers of tobacco-related products in Myanmar.
