TRIPOLI, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Sunday announced that the warring parties have agreed to freeze all military actions in the capital Tripoli, after more than two weeks of deadly clashes.

A monitoring and verification mechanism will be established to consolidate the cease-fire, with a plan to be developed to withdraw armed groups from Tripoli, the UN mission said on its Twitter account.

Tripoli recently witnessed violent clashes between government forces and militants of the "7th Brigade" militia from the nearby city of Tarhuna, some 80 km southeast of Tripoli.

According to Libya's Ministry of Health, the fighting in Tripoli had killed 78 and injured 210 others until Saturday, with 16 still missing.

On Thursday, the UNSMIL announced that the warring parties signed a UN-sponsored cease-fire agreement to end the clashes, which had displaced more than 1,800 households.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been suffering escalating violence, chaos and political division.
