ISTANBUL, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Turkish soldier surrendered to the police on Monday afternoon about two hours after taking his fiancee hostage at a school in Istanbul.
The soldier, claimed to be a specialized sergeant who fled from his brigade, locked his 22-year-old fiancee inside the toilet of the school in the district of Pendik on the Asian side of the city, the broadcaster NTV said.
The man gave himself up following dialogue with a negotiation team and was detained by the police, the broadcaster said.
NTV identified the woman as an employee with the school, where there was no student and the employees were evacuated from the building.
Special operation units, negotiators and ambulances were dispatched to the area, Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said, noting the authorities had been trying to convince the man to release his hostage.
The couple reportedly had arguments over their relationship lately.
