KABUL, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 25 Taliban militants have been killed when Afghan Air Force launched air strikes against Taliban positions in restive Ghazni province, the Afghan Defense Ministry said Friday.

"The airstrikes were conducted after intelligence tips confirmed militants' presence in the targeted hideout in Muqur district late Thursday," the ministry said in a statement.

One militants' vehicle and two 82 mm recoilless guns were also destroyed after the raid.

In early August, Taliban overran the provincial capital Ghazni city and scores of civilians, security force and militants were killed or injured during the five days of clashes.

Afghan security forces, backed by the U.S.-led NATO coalition troops, have increased ground and air offensives against militants in the past few months as the country is preparing for parliamentary and district council elections slated for Oct. 20.

The militant group has yet to make comments on the report.
