PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Two pro-government militiamen were killed and their commander injured after unknown armed men opened fire on them in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the northern Baghlan province on Sunday, provincial police spokesman Zabihullah Shija said.
The unidentified armed men, according to the official, opened fire on Sayed Mohammad, a pro-government militia commander, injuring him and killing two of his bodyguards on the spot.
The official didn't rule out the involvement of Taliban militants in attacking the commander, saying the Taliban fighters were attempting to terrorize locals.
Taliban militants, who are active in parts of Baghlan province with Pul-e-Khumri as its capital 160 km north of Kabul, haven't commented.
Locals in Baghlan-e-Markazi district told Xinhua that Taliban militants began to return to the district after leaving their bases a couple of weeks ago.
