Police officer killed in stabbing incident in northeastern Japan

TOKYO, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A police officer died after being stabbed by an attacker Wednesday in a police box in Japan's northeastern Miyagi Prefecture, according to local media.

A man, who said he had an item of lost property to hand in, attacked the police officer and fatally wounded him at the Higashi-Sendai police box in Sendai city, Miyagi Prefecture, the report said.

Another police officer alerted by the shouting, rushed to the scene from a nearby room and reportedly saw two blood-soaked men.

One of the men was his colleague.

He shot the assailant, according to local media report.

The wounded police officer in his 30s was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
