LONDON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Arsenal's veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech admits he needs to be at his best in order to continue his career at the London based club.
The 36-year-old has started all of this season's Premier League matches under new coach Unai Emery, but the arrival of former Bayer Leverkusen keeper, Bernd Leno, for over 20 million euros over the summer has put pressure on the former Czech international.
Cech is in the last season of his current contract with Arsenal and despite good performances, questions have been asked over whether or not his play with his feet is good enough for the style of football Emery wants, which demands his side play the ball right from the back.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal's Europa League tie against Vorskla Poltava on Thursday, Cech admitted the pressure was on.
"I'm in the last year of the contract so I guess it depends on my performances, the way I play and the way I stay fit throughout the season," he admitted in the British press.
Cech admitted that with Leno's arrival any errors could lead to him losing his place.
"When you bring players in you do that to improve the squad and to make it competitive and Bernd is here, trains every day and tries to get his spot. I have to work hard, not only to make sure the manager picks me for the weekend, also to ensure he sticks with me," explained Cech, who added that selection issues were harder for goalkeepers than outside players.
"Only one can play so the competition is bigger. At the moment I've been playing and I try to do my best and hope the manager is happy with my performances," he commented.
The keeper believes pressure is basic in football: "you always have someone waiting for your failure so they can jump in and you have to find a way to keep your spot," he concluded.
