ULAN BATOR, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian capital Ulan Bator closed its roads off to motors, and open them up to pedestrians and bikers Saturday to mark the World Car-Free Day.

"Motor vehicles is one of the main causes of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. Ulan Bator is joining the World Car-Free Day in a bid to promote low carbon lifestyle, physical activity and public health," the mayor's press office said in a statement.

Various events were held during the day to encourage family reunions and raise environmental awareness of the Mongolian people.

The first national car-free campaign was inaugurated in Britain by the Environmental Transport Association in 1997. After years of development, it has become an international day to encourage motorists to give up their cars to return to the nature and protect environment.
