LUSAKA, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Immigration authorities have intercepted 23 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) nationals in a suspected case of human trafficking, a spokesperson said on Sunday.
The group, comprising nine adults and 14 minors, was intercepted in the southern town of Mazabuka aboard an open truck by alert security officers at a roadblock, according to Immigration Department Spokesperson Namati Nshinka.
He said in a statement that the nine adults have been detained while the 14 minors, some as young as a year old, have been placed under the care of the Department of Social Welfare.
The driver of the truck, a Zambian national, has also been apprehended while investigations have been launched, he added.
This is the second incident of human trafficking in less than a week after five Congolese and a Namibian were arrested in another suspected case on September 18.
