BEIRUT, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) chief on Monday renewed the UNIFIL's commitment to peace in southern Lebanon.
"Excellence is what we are striving for every day in furthering peace in southern Lebanon," said Stefano Del Col, force commander and head of the mission.
His remarks came during an exhibition ceremony at Beit Beirut, a museum and urban cultural center, to celebrate the International Day of Peace and the 40th year of the UNIFIL mission serving in southern Lebanon.
The exhibition presents photographs and drawings taken over the past four decades by UN photographers that show destruction and chaos during war time in Lebanon.
"We hope that the images of destruction and chaos can be confined to the history books and to war-wounded-walls of this house. It should remind the next generation of the cost of conflict and serve as further inspiration for all of us to work together for the benefit of peace," Del Col said.
UNIFIL's spokesperson told Xinhua that UNIFIL has been working in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces to preserve stability in the south over the past 12 years.
"UNIFIL has lost so many lives and incurred big losses to preserve stability in the south," said Ziad Shbib, governor of Lebanon's capital Beirut.
