BEIRUT, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- A human trafficker was shot to death Monday in Sowayri, Bekaa by the Lebanese General Security, local media reported.
The General Security went into the trafficker's house which led the trafficker to fire at a security member, injuring him.
"General security have in return fired at the trafficker in self-defense which killed him," said a statement published by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.
The Lebanese security forces have been active lately in arresting human traffickers.
On Oct. 12, Lebanese security forces arrested five members of a network involved in smuggling of Syrians to Lebanon.
According to the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol), the migrant smuggling business has become a "large, profitable and sophisticated criminal market."
