LJUBLJANA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The average life expectancy of Slovenians reached a new record of nearly 78 years old last year, about nine years longer than the 69 in 1987, the latest data by the Slovenian national statistics office have showed.

The Mediterranean lifestyle appears to have a positive effect on health, the Slovenian press agency STA reported on Thursday.

The mean age of death for men stood at 74 years old in 2017 and for women 81.4 years. However, the longevity has been increasing faster for men than for women: the former lived 10 years longer than in 1987 and the latter 8.5 years longer, said the STA.

According to the statistics office, people lived longest in the country's southwestern coastal regions.
