SYDNEY, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- French loyalists celebrated on Monday after New Caledonia voted to remain French in a referendum on Sunday.

The archipelago with some 270,000 residents was declared a French overseas territory in 1946.

Provisional results from Sunday's vote showed about 60 percent of the eligible voters chose to remain loyal to France, with voter turnout of about 80 percent.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday welcomed the outcome of the independence referendum.
