SUVA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Fijian President Jioji Konrote was sworn in to office for the second term on Monday.
Held at Borron House, the state house, in capital Suva by Chief Justice Anthony Gates, a grand swearing-in ceremony was attended by Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Parliament Speaker Jiko Luveni, government ministers and members of the diplomatic corps.
On Aug. 31 this year, Konrote was re-elected as the country's president for another three-year term. He was elected unopposed after being nominated by Prime Minister Bainimarama.
Born in 1947, Konrote is a retired Major-General of the Fiji Military who has been president of Fiji since 2015.
After commanding a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, Konrote served as Fiji's High Commissioner to Australia from 2001 to 2006, as minister of State for Immigration briefly in 2006, and as minister for Employment Opportunities, Productivity and Industrial Relations from 2014 to 2015.
Konrote is the first president elected by the Parliament, as previous presidents were selected by the Great Council of Chiefs.
He is from the island of Rotuma with a population of just over 2,000 on the north of Fiji. According to the 2013 Constitution of Fiji, the Fijian president is the commander-in-chief of the military forces and the head of state of the island nation with a population of more than 880,000.
The president is appointed by the Parliament of Fiji for a three-year term. The second term is also the final term for a Fijian president.
