Crime in Tanzania's Zanzibar decreases by 34 pct: official

ARUSHA, Tanzania, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Crime in the Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago, has decreased by 34 percent in the period between January and October this year, Zanzibar President Ali Mohamed Shein said on Moday.

Shein said made the remarks when Tanzania's Home Affairs minister Kangi Lugulo and other key officials paid a courtesy call at Zanzibar State House.

The Zanzibar leader acknowledged the efforts by departments in the Home Affairs Ministry for the job well done, saying the ongoing efforts taken by security organs in the east African nation bore fruits of peace and harmony in the Isles.

He also said that minor offenses also had decreased by 57 percent in the period between January and October, this year.

According to Shein, strengthened safety measures and security in the Isles had enabled the residents to engage in their daily income generating activities without any worries.

"Safety and security bodies including police, immigration as well as the national Identification Authority (NIDA) plays a very big role in the country's peace," he noted.

Home Affairs Minister Lugola also assured Shein that the ministry will continue further initiatives and strategies to maintain the Isles's peace and security.

He said that apart from the sharp decrease of crime and minor offenses, the anti-drugs war had also started to pay off in the Isles.
