BAGHDAD, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Air Force on Tuesday carried out airstrikes on positions of a Syrian insurgent group inside Syria near the Iraqi border, the Iraqi military said.
The Iraqi F-16 jets pounded a weapons warehouse in Susah area in eastern Syria, containing rockets and explosives with 10 militants affiliated with al-Farouq Brigades, which is an anti-government group believed to have links with the extremist group Islamic State (IS), a statement issued by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said.
Another airstrike targeted the headquarters of al-Farouq Brigades in al-Baghuz area in eastern Syria with 30 militants inside, rockets and different kinds of assault rifles, the JOC said.
"According to the intelligence reports, the two targets were completely destroyed," it said.
The airstrikes were ordered by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who is also the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, based on accurate intelligence reports, the statement added.
The airstrikes are part of the continued preemptive airstrikes against IS militants inside Syria launched by Iraqi fighter jets.
Late last year, former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi officially declared full liberation of Iraq from IS after Iraqi forces recaptured all the areas once seized by the extremist group.
