TRIPOLI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) said on Wednesday that unidentified gunmen on Tuesday attacked Sharara oil field in southern Libya, causing no human casualties.
"Sharara oilfield sub-station B-6NC-186 was attacked around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, by an armed group of eight men. No employees were hurt in this attack or production affected," NOC said in a statement.
The attackers stole vehicles and cellphones from the employees, the statement said, adding that local authorities are investigating into the incident for the identities of the attackers.
"This incident serves to show the ongoing need for heightened security at NOC and subsidiary facilities," said NOC Chairman Mustafa Sanalla.
Sharara is the largest oil field in Libya, with a production of 270,000 barrels of crude oil per day, more than a quarter of Libya's daily production.
The field has been attacked by militants several times, and was once shut down by protesters.
