KAMPALA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ministers of countries in the African Great Lakes region are meeting on Friday in Uganda to monitor commitments made by member countries in strengthening the role of women in maintaining regional peace and security.
A statement of the United Nations (UN) office in Uganda issued prior to the meeting said the ministers will discuss and endorse the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and other relevant resolutions.
Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, requires parties in a conflict to respect women's rights and support their participation in peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction.
The ministers meeting in Entebbe, 40 km south of capital city Kampala, will also discuss the implementation of the minimum quota of 30 percent of women staff in the governments of the Great Lakes region.
The meeting is held under the auspices of the UN and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, an intergovernmental organization that comprises 12 countries -- Uganda, Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sudan, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.
