ATHENS, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Greek government on Tuesday called on Turkey to hold a "responsible stance" regarding energy issues in the eastern Mediterranean.

"Energy should be a bridge of dialogue and cooperation in our region. Turkey should refrain from threats and illegal claims and follow a responsible stance," the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a press statement.

The statement came in response to a remark made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week.

Pointing to Cyprus' drilling for hydrocarbons in Mediterranean which started this summer, the Turkish leader said that Greece and Cyprus should not make "reckless actions" in the region, Greek daily "Kathimerini" wrote, citing Turkish media.

Turkey, Greece and the Greek Cypriot government have overlapping claims for jurisdiction of offshore oil and gas research in the eastern Mediterranean.
