UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday adopted a resolution, proclaiming Jan. 24 as the International Day of Education.
At the 44th plenary meeting of the General Assembly 73rd session, the Assembly invited all member states of the United Nations, international organizations and the private sectors to observe the day, and the cost of all activities should be met from voluntary contributions.
"Education is essential to global development, and it is important to accord it a day of recognition," said Tijjani Bande, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, adding that the day will galvanize support by member states to promote access to education for all people.
He called on the international community to endorse the observance of the International Day of Education and to widen opportunities for vulnerable populations.
