SARAJEVO, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- A mother and a daughter were killed, and three other children severely injured when a drunk driver hit them on Friday late night in the center of Novi Travnik, a city located 90 kilometers northwest of the capital Sarajevo.
"The driver of the vehicle of Opel Astra brand, moving from the direction of the Kasapovici settlement, lost the control of the vehicle in front of the city mosque, climbed to the sidewalk and hit the fence," the deputy chief cantonal prosecutor Dragan Popovic, who is in charge of the case, told local media.
When a 34-year-old driver hit five persons, he had 3 permille of alcohol in his blood, Popovic said, adding that a mother was killed on the sidewalk and her 9-year-old daughter passed away during the transport to a local hospital.
Among the severely injured persons are three children, who are four, eight and 12 years old, and all are transferred to hospital for treatment.
Some 103 traffic accidents occurred on average every day on the territory of BiH in 2017, out of which some 20 traffic accidents with injured persons.
In 2017, a total of 7,135 traffic accidents ended with 298 persons dead, out of whom 12 were children. A total of 30,493 traffic accidents ended with material damage on vehicles, BiH's Automoto Club (BIHAMK) stated.
