SYDNEY, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man was left in serious condition with deep lacerations to his leg after being bitten by a shark in Australia's New South Wales state early Sunday, the latest major incident in a string of attacks involving the marine predators in recent months.
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was attacked off the popular Nambucca Heads tourist and retirement area on the state's mid north coast, according to local media.
He "lost a lot of blood" and was treated at the scene for severe lacerations to his lower leg before being airlifted to a hospital, a state ambulance spokesman told the ABC news channel.
Authorities were determining the shark species behind the attack and the beach area has been closed, reported the channel.
The latest incident comes as state authorities nationwide ramp up measures to prevent shark attacks, including setting advanced ocean drumlines to catch, tag, release and relocate the predators.
Shark attacks at popular coastal spots across the country in recent months have left at least one dead and three others severely injured.
