AMMAN, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian security forces on Thursday fired tear gas to disperse protestors gathering in a central area in Amman in rejection of the government's economic policies and the recently-endorsed income tax law.

The security forces prevented the crowds from blocking the roads near the prime minister's office in the Jordanian capital.

Around five police members were reported to be slightly injured in a stampede between protestors and the security force, according to some local media.

Hundreds of Jordanians took part in the protest, which also witnessed the participation of political parties and activists.

The protestors demanded genuine political reforms, combating corruption and revoking the income tax bill.

In May, nationwide protests in rejection of the bill led to the resignation of former prime minister Hani Mulki and his team.

The recently endorsed income tax bill is part of fiscal reforms Jordan is working on to offset its budget deficit and reduce its high public debt, which currently accounts for around 95 percent of the country's gross domestic product.
