TRIPOLI, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu Saturday agreed to start a joint investigation on two shipments of weapons that came from Turkey to Libya.
"The prime minister expressed his deep concern over the shipment of weapons seized a few days ago in the port of Khoms city from Turkey, stressing the need to reveal the truth of the issue and those behind it," said a statement issued by the Libyan prime minister's information office.
"The two sides agreed to open an urgent joint investigation on the circumstances of the incident and uncover those involved," the statement said.
The Libyan eastern-based army on Wednesday demanded the UN Security Council to start an immediate investigation into the two shipments.
The UN Support Mission in Libya on Thursday said that the UN Panel of Experts is expected to look into the seized shipments.
The Libyan government then announced Thursday it will start an investigation into the case and contact Turkish authorities to clarify the circumstances of the shipments, Libyan prime minister's spokesman said in a statement.
The UN Security Council has imposed a ban on the sale and supply of arms to Libya since 2011.
