Malaysia's crime index improves on lower reported violent, property offence

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's crime index ratio per 100,000 population has improved to 309.7 last year from 355.2 in 2016 due to lesser violent and property crimes reported, an official statement showed Friday.

Based on the data obtained from the Malaysian police, the Malaysian Statistics Department said the crime index which comprise violent and property crimes registered a decline of 11.7 percent to 99,168 cases in 2017.

Violent crimes and property crimes dropped 4.3 percent to 21,366 cases and 13.6 percent to 77,802 cases respectively.

This was the first time that the department published the country's crime statistics.

Based on the data obtained from the National Anti-Drugs Agency, the department also highlighted that the number of drug addicts in Malaysia decreased 16 percent to 25,922 persons in 2017.
