SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- A militant was killed Friday in a fierce gunfight with contingents of troops and police in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Renzipora in Pulwama district, about 35 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A militant was killed in gunfight here today," a senior police official posted in Pulwama told Xinhua. "The identity of slain militant and his group affiliation is being ascertained."

Officials said the gunfight broke out after joint contingents of Indian army and police cordoned off the area following specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

"No sooner the contingents moved towards the suspected area, it came under heavy fire and in the stand-off the militant was killed," a police spokesman said.

Reports said two militants managed to break the cordon and escaped from the area.

Authorities have suspended mobile internet service in the district and closed roads leading to the site.

Locals said the slain militant was a local cadre of region's indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen hailing from village Koil in Pulwama.

Following the killing of a militant, violent protests broke out in Pulwama and irate protesters clashed with police.

Last week six militants were killed in a brief gunfight in an open field in Tral area of the district.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
