SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Four militants were killed on Saturday in a predawn fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Hajin Payeen of Pulwama district, about 40 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"In a predawn fierce gunfight here today, four militants were killed fighting joint contingents of police and army," a senior police official posted in Pulwama told Xinhua.

According to police, the gunfight broke out after government forces cordoned off the area on specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

"No sooner the joint contingents reached near the suspected area, the militants present there fired upon them, thereby triggering a gunfight," the police said.

Indian troops or police have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

Meanwhile, intense clashes erupted between protesters and government forces near the site of gunfight.

Reports said the residents, especially youth took to roads and hurled stones and brickbats on government forces, who responded by firing tear smoke shells, pellets and warning shots. At least 10 people were injured in the violent clashes, hospital officials said.

Locals said the house from where militants were firing on police positions has been completely damaged.

On Friday a militant was killed in a similar gunfight in Renzipora village of the district.

Meanwhile, a low intensity bomb blast took place on Friday night at bus stand in Jammu city, the region's winter capital. However, no casualties were reported in the blast.
