Germany overcome Australia to book place in Hopman Cup Final against Switzerland

SYDNEY, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Germany will take on Switzerland in the final of the Hopman Cup after defeating Australia 2-1 in Friday evening's semifinal clash in Perth.

Although the local crowd were right behind Aussie talent Ash Barty, women's world No. 2 Angelique Kerber showed her class, outgunning the youngster in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the men's bracket, it was a similar story when world No. 4 Alexandar Zverev blasted his way past Matt Ebden 6-4, 6-3.

Thrilled at the chance to avenge last year's loss to Switzerland, Zverev said after the match "it's nice to be back in a final. It's nice to play Switzerland as well."

"We lost a very close match last year, and we definitely wanted to get there and compete for the title again."

"And that's why me and Angie decided after last year's final that we are definitely going to come back here to Perth," he added.

Despite going out of the tournament, the Aussie crowd did have something to cheer for when Ashleigh Barty and Matthew Ebden scored a consolation victory in the mixed doubles round, winning contest 4-0, 4-3 (1).

The final between Germany and Switzerland featuring Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic will is set to take place Saturday evening.
