ATHENS, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A large amount of Captagon amphetamine pills, notoriously favored by ISIS fighters, was found in a container at Piraeus port, the Greek national news agency AMNA reported on Monday.

Greek authorities have not yet formally revealed further information.

The pills were hidden in lead pipes, and the shipment had arrived in Greece from the Middle East, probably from Syria, two days ago. Its final destination was Croatia, AMNA reported, citing police sources.

The discovery was made during a joint operation by the Attica Police's anti-narcotics squad and their Turkish counterpart, with the assistance of the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Greek Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) and customs authorities.

On Dec. 14, 2018, Greek authorities announced that they had discovered a massive haul of drugs with an estimated street value exceeding 100 million euros (115 million U.S. dollars) on board a Syrian-flagged ship.

In March 2017, Greek authorities dismantled a criminal ring, which was manufacturing near Athens and trafficking the same synthetic amphetamine that has been associated with ISIS fighters in recent years.

During a raid on a narcotics lab, authorities discovered and seized 635,000 tablets of Captagon, with an estimated market value of 10 million euros. (1 euro = 1.15 U.S. dollars)
