HANOI, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A suspected outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was reported in Vietnam's northern Tuyen Quang province, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Department on Friday.
Some 100 pigs in the two districts of Son Duong and Ham Yen have recently developed FMD symptoms and specimens taken from them are being tested for FMD viruses.
The department has instructed localities in Tuyen Quang not to cover up disease outbreaks, transport infected pigs, nor discharge carcasses rampantly. Meanwhile, people have been advised not to eat meat of sick pigs.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease of many wild and domestic cloven-hoofed animals. In pigs, it is characterized by vesicles on the feet, snout and in the mouth.
