NAIROBI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after attackers struck an upmarket hotel and office complex in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Tuesday, police and witnesses said.

Somalia-based terrorist group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group has been targeting Kenya-Somalia border areas and killing innocent citizens since Kenyan soldiers entered Somalia in 2011 to secure the two countries' shared border.

The following are a string of major terrorist attacks recorded in Kenya in recent five years:

-- MANDERA, Oct. 10, 2018: Militants killed two Kenyan teachers and torched a local school in Mandera county in northeast Kenya. The school is situated at the Kenya-Somalia border in an area marked as a terror zone.

-- GARISSA, April 2, 2015: At least 15 people have been confirmed dead and 65 others injured after gunmen stormed a university in northeast Kenya.

Heavily armed assailants forced their way into Moi University at about 5:30 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) and gained entry into student hostels after firing at guards manning the main gate.

-- MANDERA, Nov. 22, 2014: Al-Shabaab militants attacked a public passenger bus in Mandera, northern Kenya, killing 28 people and injuring several others. Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said the attack was staged in retaliation for security raids on mosques in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa earlier in the week.

-- MOMBASA, June 16, 2014: At least 27 people, including a policeman, were killed and an number of others injured in an attack in the coastal town of Mpeketoni in east Kenya.

The police said more than 50 masked gunmen descended on the busy town, sprayed bullets on villagers, and torched several houses and buildings.

-- NAIROBI, May 16, 2014: At least 10 people were killed and 70 others injured in two explosions in Kenya's capital Nairobi. One of the twin blasts hit a 14-seater passenger vehicle, while the other occurred inside Gikomba market, Nairobi's biggest open-air market.

-- NAIROBI, Sept. 22, 2013: A terror attack hit an upscale shopping mall in Kenya's capital city and left at least 67 shoppers and security agents dead and 175 others injured. The siege lasted more than two days.

The Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack which it said was carried out in retaliation for Kenya's military intervention in Somalia. It was the bloodiest assault in Kenya since the U.S. Embassy was bombed in 1998.
