BERLIN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Pupils and students demonstrated for climate protection in numerous German cities on Friday.pp
According to the website of the organizers of the demonstration, young people in over 50 cities demonstrated against rising greenhouse gas emissions and the mining of coal, oil and gas.
"We are calling for more climate protection and the phase-out of coal from the German government - and not just in ten years," the organizers demand on their website.
The protests of German students under the motto Fridays for Future are based on the example of the Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, who has not been going to school on Fridays for months to protest for climate protection.
On Friday next week, new protests by the students are planned in Berlin to show "that we in Germany no longer have time for fossil fuels because they are obstructing our future", according to the organizers' website.
On the same day, the so-called coal commission, which seeks to develop a plan for Germany's opting out from coal-based energy generation, meets in Berlin.
