HANOI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- A man from Vietnam's central Nghe An province has been detained for buying 4 kg of crystal methamphetamine and eight cakes of heroin in Laos and then transporting them to Vietnam, provincial police said on Tuesday.

The police arrested Lang Van Thai when he was transporting the drugs in Nghe An's Thanh Chuong district. The 38-year-old detainee confessed that he had smuggled heroin, methamphetamine and ecstasy from Laos to the province several times.

According to the Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
