DOHA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Thursday discussed with U.S. Peace Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad means to bring peace and stability in war-torn Afghanistan.

Khalilzad is currently on a visit to Qatar for talks with the Afghan Taliban militants, according to a statement by the Qatari Foreign Ministry with no further details.

The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday that Khalilzad, the U.S. Special Representative on Afghan Reconciliation, met in Doha on Jan. 22 with "representatives of the Taliban."

Khalilzad has canceled a meeting with the representatives of the Taliban that was scheduled in Qatar on Jan. 9-10, days after the movement refused to meet with representatives from the Afghan government in the state of the United Arab Emirates.

Qatar, which is hosting a political office for the Taliban, affirmed during the Geneva International Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan that it would continue its mediation endeavors to establish peace among the different factions there.

Qatar also emphasized its belief that any military solution for the Afghan crisis would be futile.
