TOKYO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as solid earnings from U.S. chipmakers brightened the market mood, while a comparatively weak yen versus the U.S. dollar gave exporter issues a boost.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 196.65 points, or 0.96 percent, from Thursday to 20,771.28, in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 14.01 points, or 0.90 percent, at 1,566.61.
Oil and coal product, mining, and pulp and paper-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in early trade.
