5 killed, 12 injured in truck-van collision in southern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and 12 others injured when a speeding truck rammed into a passenger van in Pakistan's southern Sindh Province, local media reported on Friday.

According to the reports, the accident happened on the Indus Highway in Jamshoro, a district in Sindh province, resulting in the death of four people on the spot. One injured person succumbed to his injuries while on the way to a nearby hospital.

Following the crash, police along with rescue teams reached the area and shifted the bodies and injured to the Civil Hospital Jamshoro, where several among the injured are in critical condition, according to the hospital sources.

Women and children were among the injured people, local TV channel Geo News quoted police sources as saying.

According to official data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 9,000 road accidents are reported every year since 2011 in the country, killing more than 4,500 people on average annually.

Traffic police officials said 90 percent of the accidents in Pakistan are caused by human error. Enditem
