KIEV, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least one Ukrainian soldier was killed and four others injured when a Ukrainian army vehicle came under shelling in the country's conflict-hit Donbas region on Friday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said.
The vehicle came under attack from a surface-to-air missile system in the village of Katerynivka not far from the contact line which separates the confronting forces, the ministry said in a statement.
The Ukrainian military fired in response, causing losses to the rebels, it said.
The incident marked the latest escalation of tensions in Donbas after a period of a relative lull.
On Dec. 29, 2018, the confronting parties in eastern Ukraine started to observe a fresh ceasefire in the conflict that has been under way since April 2014.
More than 3,300 Ukrainian army soldiers have been killed in the almost five-year-long confrontation with rebels.
