Tokyo stocks advance in morning as Fed indicates pause in rate hikes

TOKYO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks advanced Thursday morning following Wall Street setting a positive tone overnight, with investor sentiment bolstered by the U.S. Federal Reserve suggesting it may pause further rate hikes for the sake of the U.S. economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 184.10 points, or 0.90 percent, from Wednesday to 20,740.64.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 14.42 points, or 0.93 percent, at 1,565.18.

Glass and ceramics, miscellaneous products and mining-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
