KHARTOUM, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The inflation rate in Sudan greatly dropped to 43.45 percent in January compared with 72.94 percent in December last year, said Sudan's Central Statistics Bureau in a monthly report on Monday.
The drop in inflation was attributed to the decline in prices of food, drinks and transport, the report noted.
It said that the inflation at the urban areas registered a drop of 41.58 percent in January, while it was 68.25 percent in December.
As for the rural areas, it registered a drop of 44.62 percent, compared with 76.93 in December, according to the report.
Since the beginning of 2018, the inflation rates in Sudan had been registering record high figures, reaching 72.94 percent in December after it was 25.15 percent in December 2017.
A number of factors contributed to the rise in Sudan's inflation rate, including the great hike in prices of consumption commodities as well as the decline in the exchange rate of the national currency against foreign currencies.
To this end, the Central Bank of Sudan early this year said it was working to decrease the inflation to 27.1 percent during 2019 to contribute to achieving a real growth in the GDP estimated at about 5.1 percent.
Sudan has been suffering a dire economic crisis since the secession of South Sudan in 2011, which caused a loss of 75 percent of oil revenues.
