BAGHDAD, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed and another wounded Wednesday in an attack by Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a provincial security source said.

"A fierce clash erupted when Daesh (IS group) terrorists attacked an Iraqi police outpost near Imam Weis area, some 45 km northeast the provincial capital Baquba, killing one policeman and injuring another," Major Alaa al-Saadi, from Diyala's Operations Command, told Xinhua.

According to al-Saadi, the extremist militants sustained unknown number of casualties, as the attackers fled the scene after reinforcement troops arrived.

In December 2017, Iraq declared full liberation from the IS after the security forces and the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi units, backed by the anti-IS international coalition, recaptured all areas once seized by the extremist group.

However, IS remnants have since melted in urban areas or resorted to deserts and rugged areas as safe havens, carrying out guerilla attacks from time to time against the security forces and civilians.
