ABUJA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Eleven Boko Haram militants were killed and many others wounded following an attack repelled by troops in Madagali town of Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa, the army said in a statement on Thursday.
The terror group invaded the town with five gun trucks, an armored personnel carrier, and an improvised explosive device-borne vehicle late Tuesday to wreak havoc on the local residents.
The army said troops destroyed and recovered the high-caliber ammunition and equipment from the terrorists while repelling the attack.
However, a civilian volunteer was killed while helping the troops during the gunfight. One soldier was also wounded, the army added.
Boko Haram has been trying since 2009 to establish an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria, killing some 20,000 people and forcing displacement of millions of others.
The terrorist organization is based in northeastern Nigeria, and also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon.
