MEXICO CITY, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- An attack by armed gunmen at a bar in Mexico's famed Caribbean resort of Cancun left at least five dead and several injured, local prosecutor told Xinhua on Saturday.
Local media reported that the gunmen opened fire on a group of people after bursting into the club "La Kuka" at 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Witnesses told police that three to five individuals fled the scene in a car. The scene of the shooting is located some 13 kilometers from the tourist resort's hotel zone.
The local prosecutor said the authorities were seeking information on the attack.
In the past few years, Cancun, Mexico's main tourist destination, has registered numerous violent incidents, which the Quintana Roo government has attributed to criminal groups fighting to control illegal drugs.
On Tuesday, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin, announced a new strategy supported by more technology and improved policing to counter the insecurity in the area.
