JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The South African Police Service on Thursday arrested four people suspected to be following people from O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and robbing them, police said.
The police said they acted on intelligence and found the four suspects in Alexandra township in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the suspects managed to flee, and there was a high speed chase and a shootout afterwards. At last their vehicle swerved off the road, crashing to a halt.
"Four suspects were arrested of which one was shot and wounded," said Naidoo.
The police recovered two handguns. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in the commission of other crimes.
Naidoo said the suspects are believed to have been involved in multiple cases of "follow home" robberies from the OR Tambo International Airport. Many people including tourists had been followed from the O.R. Tambo International Airport and robbed of their belongings.
In 2017, 36 elderly Dutch tourists, who had just arrived at the airport for a three-week holiday, were attacked by armed robbers posing as police.
