PARIS, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Monaco have appointed Oleg Petrov as their new Chief Executive Officer following the nomination by the club President Dmitry Rybolovlev, the Ligue 1 club announced in a statement on Friday.

Petrov, 55, holds degrees in economics and linguistics and is fluent in five languages. He has worked in large international companies in several sectors.

"It is an honor for me to be appointed to this position at the club with such history, traditions, and one of the most impressive records in French football," said Petrov after his appointment.

"We will make every effort to help the club get back to the winning ways that it has enjoyed in recent years, and to continue its development. We have a lot of work ahead, but the team has great potential, and I am optimistic about the future," he added.

Petrov took over as CEO following Vadim Vasilyev's depature, with poor performance this season mainly to blame.

Monaco, the champion of the 2016-17 season of Ligue 1, currently sit 16th in the ongoing 2018-19 season, struggling to avoid relegation.

"After our recent difficulties, these changes should help Monaco return to winning ways. Our priority today is to focus on a strong finish to the season and to do everything possible to strengthen the position of the team," said Rybolovlev.
