LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Several Afghan soldiers and militants were killed and injured after Taliban militants stormed a national army's main base in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand early Friday, a local source said.

"The armed militants made their way inside the Corps 215 Maywand in Shorab area of Helmand at early hours of Friday. We have causalities and fatalities but we still cannot provide details on causalities," an army source told Xinhua anonymously.

More details would be made public later in the day as a cleanup operation is underway and sporadic clashes are still ongoing, the source added.

Local media Tolo News TV reported that at least 21 assailants were involved in the attack.

"Three suicide bombers detonated their explosive belts and six militants were shot dead by army soldiers," the report said, adding three army troops were also wounded during the clashes which started roughly at 3:00 a.m. local time.

Further details about the incident are forthcoming amid the absence of any official statement.

Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
