SOFIA, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian customs have seized 5.9 tons of counterfeit cigarette packs at the Danube Bridge checkpoint near Vidin at the border with Romania, officials said here on Thursday.
The paperboard packs bearing the logo of a popular English cigarette brand were found in a truck traveling from Bulgaria to western Europe, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release.
The shipment was declared only as cardboard, the NCA said, adding that the trademark owner was notified.
Due to its location, Bulgaria is a favorite transit for traffickers. In 2018, the NCA seized more than 16.1 tons of drugs and precursors, 51.2 million illegal cigarettes and 5.4 tons of smuggled tobacco.
