NEW DELHI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- India's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday launched its campaign for the upcoming general elections, demanding with full statehood for Delhi.

"The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi would be held for complete statehood," Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal said while addressing a press conference.

"The way people in Telangana, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand have fought for separate statehood, now people in Delhi would also strive for this cause," Kejriwal said.

Delhi will head for polls in a single-phase on May 12.

Kejriwal attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)-led federal government for creating hurdles in Delhi's functioning and accused them for being "unfair" to resident of capital city.

Delhi is a National Capital Territory and a semi-state under a lieutenant governor and a chief minister.

Currently, the region is run by AAP government. However unlike other chief ministers of Indian states, Delhi chief minister has limited powers.
