HO CHI MINH CITY, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese police on Wednesday raided a house in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, detaining five Vietnamese and foreign drug traffickers, and confiscating some 300 kg of crystal methamphetamine, local media reported.

The drug, the biggest-ever amount seized in Ho Chi Minh City, was transported from Laos to the city via trails around Bo Y international border gate in Vietnam's central highlands Kon Tum province, online newspaper VnExpress quoted the municipal police as reporting.

Vietnamese police also raided other houses in central highlands Dak Nong province and the two southern provinces of Binh Duong and Tay Ninh, which were suspected of storing drugs of the transnational drug trafficking ring.

According to the Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
