ISLAMABAD, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Senior Pakistani religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani was attacked in the southern port city of Karachi on Friday.
The scholar escaped unhurt, while at least two people were killed and two others injured in the attack, police said.
The scholar was travelling with his family after Friday prayers when unknown gunmen sprayed bullets on his vehicle and fled the scene, Inspector General police Kaleem Imam said.
Another vehicle which was following Usmani's car was also attacked by the militants, police said, adding that the escorting car was carrying the scholar's guards including a police.
The killed were Usmani's guards including the police, while two other guards got injured.
On initial investigations, police said that the scholar's vehicle was attacked by four terrorists riding two motorbikes.
Those injured were shifted to Jinnah Hospital Karachi whose Medical Superintendent Seemi Jamali said that one of the injured guard was in critical condition.
Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the adjoining areas to nab the militants.
No group or individual has claimed the attack yet.
